Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine which uses essential oils and other aromatic compounds from plants to improve health and overall well-being. Every plant contains unique volatile aroma compounds either in its roots, leafs, flowers or seeds which are believed to have curative effects. The use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes has its origin in ancient times, while the name “aromatherapy” dates from 1937 when the French chemist and perfumer Rene Maurice Gattefosse published a book in which he introduced the benefits of essential oils for health.
Aromatherapy bases on use of essential oils which are applied in three ways:
- aerial diffusion
- direct inhalation and
- topical application
Aromatherapy is generally considered safe although there are certain safety concerns. Essential oil are highly concentrated and can seriously irritate the skin if used undiluted. In some individuals can also occur allergic reactions, while some citrus peel oils can cause phototoxic reactions even if diluted.
If deciding to use essential oils you must not never use them undiluted if applied directly to the skin. Buy only quality essential oils which must be in dark bottles. Quality essential oils are commonly labeled as “pure” essential oils and are made from organically grown plants which reduces the risk of potential contamination with pesticides. Store them out of reach to children because the majority of essential oils are highly toxic. If having sensitive skin, if suffering from epilepsy or high blood pressure, or if you had a surgery recently consult with your health care provider or a licensed aromatherapy professional before using essential oils.
