Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice originating from India. Outside India it commonly practiced as a form of exercise which combines number of techniques ranging from breathing exercises and physical postures to meditation and relaxation techniques. Yoga is one of the most effective ways to improve fitness and maintain general health and overall well-being but it is also very helpful for relieving certain medical problems and their symptoms.
Yoga evolved from spiritual practice in Hinduism but the form of yoga practiced in the Western countries has little in common with the traditional Hindu religion. In the Western world, yoga is virtually a pure form of exercise and is commonly adjusted to people with particular health problems. As a supplementary therapy, yoga is often recommended even by the mainstream physicians and psychologists because it is very effective in relieving of series of health problems including arthritis, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, overweight, premenstrual syndrome, poor digestion and many other conditions, especially stress-related ones. Yoga can be easily practiced on one own at home but if being a beginner it might be better to join a yoga class to learn to perform the techniques and exercises properly.
There are virtually no safety concerns although some yoga exercises and postures might not be appropriate for everyone. If having a medical condition you are highly recommended to consult with a yoga teacher or your health care provider.
